MEXICO CITY — A tortilla shop has started giving free wifi and television access for kids in its Mexico City neighborhood whose homes don’t have them, or whose brothers and sisters are already using the services for remote learning during the pandemic.

Mexico’s government schools started at-distance classes Aug. 24 using televised lessons due to the coronavirus, because 94% of Mexican homes have TVs. But there are often many youngsters in a Mexican family and they all need to look up something online or watch classes at the same time.

Payton, 56, acknowledges he was one of the lucky ones. He never felt any of the respiratory symptoms that are commonly associated with COVID-19, and he didn’t require hospitalization.

When Payton received his results, there had been only 392 documented cases of COVID-19 in the state of Louisiana, and 249 in Orleans Parish. Less than six months later, the numbers painted a different picture altogether. As of Sept. 12, nearly 160,000 Louisianans have tested positive — including Saints owner Gayle Benson.

Benson didn’t need to be hospitalized with her bout in August either, but the 73-year-old did receive daily medical care for her

Dr. Phil recalls Carroll Shelby’s race for the perfect golf gadget

Elroy Mariano

If you’re playing golf on Labor Day, you might think of race-car legend Carroll Shelby when you shank a ball into a water hazard.

Shelby — who was a dedicated member of LA’s exclusive Bel Air Country Club — invented other gizmos besides hot rods, and apparently spent much of his time on the links trying to concoct the perfect device for retrieving golf balls from the drink.

“I saw Carroll every day,” the late driver’s pal, Dr. Phil, told us. “We were really good friends. You know, he was Texan . . . I’m from Texas, and we were both members of the same club where we played golf. I met him there close to 20 years ago. He was a fun guy.”

The talk-show star added of his pal, “He was such an inventor! The most valuable club in my bag is the ‘ball getter’ . . .
